Fourth Grade

BIBLE
Bible is a daily class which introduces Bible truths showing students how God wants them to live.  Scripture reading, memorization and discussion help students develop practical life application.  Students also attend weekly chapel services.

HEALTH
The Health course begins with a study of the skeletal system, muscular system and the respiratory system.  Students learn the importance of practicing good personal hygiene with the study of teeth and skin.

HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY
The History/Geography course is the students’ first formal study of United States history.  They study major people and events that took place from beginning explorations to the founding of our great country and beyond.  They spend six weeks studying about North Carolina.  Included in this study is a day trip to our state capital, Raleigh.  In geography, students study North America, Europe, North Carolina and the capitals of the United States.

LANGUAGE
Students in the Language course learn to identify and classify the eight parts of speech as used in sentences.  They learn simple and compound subjects and verbs.  Students study expository and persuasive paragraph writing as well as journaling and letter writing.

MATH
The Math course reviews basic mathematical concepts and teaches new concepts such as two and three digit multiplication, long division, solving equations, finding area and perimeter, and writing decimals as fractions. Emphasis is placed on fractions as students learn to add, subtract and multiply fractions with common and uncommon denominators.  The student also has practice in reducing and changing fractions to mixed or whole numbers.

READING
Students read stories, poems and novels that develop vocabulary skills and strengthen their reading comprehension.  They learn to recall facts and apply reasoning skills.  Reading selections place an emphasis on character and patriotism.  Timed skill exercises teach students to read quickly and with comprehension.  Students practice their oral reading by using the Bible as a text.

SCIENCE
Understanding God’s World teaches students to see, observe and understand the world around them.  They learn to identify rocks, interpret cloud formations and to recognize plants, insects and birds.  The twenty-five state birds are taught and reviewed throughout the year.  Students also learn how plants germinate, the causes of weather, the wonders of the ocean and the design of the solar system.

SPELLING
The phonetically arranged weekly word lists allow for both better spelling and vocabulary enrichment. The included activities enhance learning, and a glossary allows for quick reference. The weekly lesson also includes Scripture which is used for spelling, memorization and discussion.
