COMPUTER 6th-8th
The Computer is an enrichment course of one semester which integrates biblical principles into the topics of study. These topics include coverage of the computer keyboard, a concentrate on word processing and document enhancement in the Microsoft Word software programs. They are introduced to spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel and slide shows in Microsoft Power Point.
COMPUTER I
Prerequisite: None
Eligibility: 9, 10, 11, 12
In the Computer I course, students learn several Microsoft Office 2003 applications. Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point are the main focuses. Through hands-on learning, students create letters, lists, charts and mailing labels with Microsoft Word. With Microsoft Excel, students learn to use functions, generate charts and format worksheets. Microsoft PowerPoint allows students to construct elaborate slide show presentations that include charts and pictures. Students edit and enhance these presentations through layouts, graphics, slide transitions and formatting. This course also emphasizes critical thinking to help students apply the Office 2003 applications to real world experiences. This course credit is required for graduation.
LIBRARY 6th-8th
In the Library, students are encouraged to use the library for research, either class assigned or for personal enrichment and reading enjoyment. Middle school classes can visit the library every two – three weeks as teachers incorporate into their schedules. Students may come on their own whenever their schedule permits or before and after school.
OFFICE ASSISTANT
Prerequisite: Dependability
Eligibility: 11, 12
The Office Assistant course is designed for students who are interested in pursuing some field of business. It provides an opportunity to work in an office setting during school. Students work either in the main office or the guidance office. They must be capable of disseminating information, filing, be able to demonstrate maturity, responsibility, integrity and an interest in acquiring practical experience.
PRAISE AND WORSHIP / BIBLE I, II, III, IV
Prerequisite: Vocal/instrumental talent; audition
Eligibility: 11, 12
In the Praise and Worship course, students are allowed to lead the student body in worship each week in chapel. Students are encouraged to develop as strong leaders, spiritually and musically, and to be able to use these gifts in their churches. The Bible curriculum is designed to give students a background and firm foundation in basic Bible facts and doctrines as well as spiritual guidelines for living the Christian Life.
PSYCHOLOGY
Prerequisite: None
Eligibility: 11, 12
The Psychology course offers an overview of the field of psychology. Some of the topics covered are the nature and nurture of behavior, human development, sensation, perception, learning, memory, intelligence, motivation, emotion, personality, stress and health. The major psychological disorders as well as major types of therapies will be taught. The text for the course is Psychology by David G. Myers. Power point lessons, class discussions and experiments are used to reinforce the text.
SAT PREP
Prerequisite: Geometry credit or concurrently taking Geometry
Eligibility: 10, 11, 12
The SAT Prep course will review both math and verbal skills. The math portion includes a refresher course in arithmetic, algebra and geometry skills while also developing test-taking strategies for the new SAT. The verbal portion includes activities to build vocabulary, work to improve reading comprehension and practice on sentence completion and essay composition.
SENIOR INTERNSHIP
Prerequisite: Part-time job or ability to secure job
Eligibility: 12
The Senior Internship course is designed for students seeking on-the-job training in the workplace or for those students who have a part-time job. Through a cooperative agreement between the school, the employer, the student and his/her parent; the student receives a unit of credit for successfully fulfilling employment requirements. Written training agreements between the school, employers and students are developed. The student is required to work at least 20 hours per month and the employer completes a quarterly evaluation of the student’s job performance.
TEACHER ASSISTANT
Prerequisite: Dependability
Eligibility: 12
The Teacher Assistant course is designed for those students who are interested in pursuing a career in education, or other related fields. Students have the opportunity to receive hands-on experience in a classroom setting. They serve as an assistant in a classroom or the library with the teacher’s supervision. Students are expected to demonstrate maturity, responsibility, integrity and an interest in acquiring practical experience.
